Byzantine baths of Thessaloniki

The Byzantine Baths are located in the Upper Town of Thessaloniki and are the only surviving baths of the Middle Byzantine period in all of Greece. They operated continuously until 1940, and today they are among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Opening Hours: Opening hours are extremely limited. According to the latest information, the monument can only be visited on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On other days (Monday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday) it is closed.

Historical Data

Dating: The building dates between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century.
Use: During the Byzantine period, it functioned as a public, neighborhood bath, serving men and women in turn. During the Ottoman period, it was known as ‘Koule Hamam’.
Architecture: It maintains the typical tripartite arrangement of the Byzantine baths, with an antechamber (changing room), a lukewarm (middle house) and a warm room (thermoluterion), heated by a hypocaust system (underfloor heating).
